HOW AI PLATFORMS CHOOSE WHICH SOURCES AND BRANDS TO RECOMMEND

How AI answers are built

How AI platforms choose which sources and brands to recommend.

Learn how AI answer engines discover and use web sources, why some businesses appear in recommendations while others do not, and which parts of the process you can realistically influence through AEO.

01 How AI answers work

AI answers are not simply a new list of search results.

An AI answer can combine information from its model, web search, retrieved documents and other available sources before synthesising a conversational response.

Exactly how this happens depends on the platform, the question and the features being used. Some queries may require current web information, while others can be answered without visible external sources.

When web retrieval is involved, a useful simplified model looks like this:

01 Understand

Interpret what the user actually wants.

02 Retrieve

Find potentially useful information.

03 Evaluate

Determine which information helps answer it.

04 Synthesise

Generate a useful response.

05 Surface

Show relevant brands, links or citations.

02 Source selection

How can a webpage move from the web into an AI answer?

Your page does not compete for a citation in isolation. It sits within a much larger pool of potentially relevant information.

A retrieval system may search broadly, encounter multiple candidate sources and use only a subset when constructing the final answer.

03 Useful source characteristics

What gives a page a better reason to be used?

There is no universal list of AI citation ranking factors. Instead, think about the characteristics that make information genuinely useful for answering a particular question.

Relevance

The page directly addresses the question, subtopic or decision the user is asking about.

Intent Topic fit

Clarity

Important facts and explanations are explicit, well structured and easy to understand.

Structure Answers

Original value

The page contributes data, experience, methodology or insight rather than simply repeating existing summaries.

Research Experience

Reliability

Important claims are supported, authorship is clear and the source has a credible reason to know what it is talking about.

Evidence Trust

Current information

For time-sensitive topics, current and maintained information may be more useful than an outdated source.

Freshness Accuracy

Accessibility

The information must be available to the relevant retrieval or search systems before it can become useful source material.

Crawling Discovery
04 Source types

AI answers can draw value from very different kinds of websites.

The “best” source depends heavily on what is being asked. A company’s own website may be the strongest source for its pricing, while an independent publication may be more useful for a comparison.

Source Often useful for Example information AEO opportunity
First-party website Authoritative business facts Features, pricing, locations, policies Publish clear primary information
Industry publication Independent context Market analysis, interviews, comparisons Digital PR and expert contributions
Research source Evidence Statistics, studies and methodology Create original research or earn references
Official source Primary factual information Regulation, standards, public data Use primary sources to support factual claims
Review / comparison source Buying decisions Alternatives, strengths, weaknesses Build genuine independent visibility
Community discussion Experience and sentiment Real-world use cases and opinions Earn authentic discussion, not manufactured mentions
05 Brand recommendations

How does a source become a brand recommendation?

This is where AEO becomes more complex. Evidence about a business and an actual recommendation of that business are not the same thing.

If somebody asks for a factual definition, the answer may not need to recommend a company at all. But a prompt such as “Which software is best for a small agency?” requires the system to identify options that match a set of implied or explicit criteria.

Prompt relevance

Does the business actually fit the requirements, audience, geography or use case in the question?

Fit Intent

Clear positioning

Is there enough clear information to understand what the company does and when it is relevant?

Brand Entity

Supported claims

Is the reason to choose the business supported by specific capabilities and evidence rather than vague marketing claims?

Evidence Capabilities

Independent context

Do sources outside the company’s own website provide useful context around the brand?

PR Third party

Comparison context

Is there enough useful information to explain how the option differs from competing alternatives?

Alternatives Differences

Wider reputation

For some questions, independent reviews, experience and broader market recognition may provide useful additional context.

Reputation Experience
06 Source visibility vs brand visibility

The website being cited and the brand being recommended can be completely different.

This is one of the most important concepts in Answer Engine Optimisation.

Scenario Brand Source What it means
Your article supports an explanation Not mentioned Your website You have citation visibility
Your company appears in a list Mentioned Third-party publication External content influences brand visibility
Your company is suggested Recommended Multiple sources Several pieces of information may support the answer
Competitor is recommended Competitor Independent comparison site The opportunity may exist off your own domain
AEO diagnosis Look beyond your own website
Too narrow

“Our homepage needs more keywords.”

The recommendation actually relies on independent comparisons and specialist industry sources.

The proposed fix does not match the evidence.
Better

“Build visibility in the sources shaping the answer.”

Improve your own comparison content while also investigating the independent sources repeatedly associated with recommended competitors.

Now the action follows the actual source landscape.
07 Improving your chances

What can you actually influence?

You cannot choose yourself as an AI source or force an AI system to recommend your company. You can improve the information environment from which those decisions are made.

Stay discoverable

Keep useful public content technically accessible to the relevant search and retrieval systems.

Technical Crawling

Create better answers

Publish clear information around the questions customers genuinely ask.

Content Intent

Publish original evidence

Create statistics, examples and expertise that provide a reason to use your page as a source.

Research Evidence

Clarify the brand

Make your products, audience, use cases, location and positioning explicit.

Entity Positioning

Build external context

Earn legitimate industry coverage, references and independent discussion.

Authority Outreach

Measure the real answers

Track the sources, brands and competitors that actually appear instead of optimising from assumptions.

08 Platform differences

Each AI provider can build the answer differently.

The broad source-selection model is useful, but individual AI products expose important differences in how they search and show supporting information.

ChatGPT

ChatGPT Search can retrieve web information and surface citations. OpenAI says Search uses multiple factors intended to find relevant, reliable information.

ChatGPT visibility →

Gemini

Gemini can show public web sources and related links, although not every response includes visible sources.

Gemini visibility →

Claude

Claude can generate targeted searches, retrieve relevant results and progressively search further before producing a cited response.

Claude visibility →

Perplexity

Perplexity searches the web in real time and presents answers backed by citations and links to original sources.

09 Measure the source landscape

The answer itself tells you where to investigate.

You do not need to reverse-engineer an AI model. You need to understand the repeatable patterns inside the answers relevant to your business.

Cited domains Who influences the topic?

Find domains appearing repeatedly across important prompts.

Cited pages What information wins?

Identify the individual pages being selected as sources.

Recommendations Which brands are chosen?

Measure which businesses repeatedly enter the consideration set.

Source overlap What supports competitors?

Look for sources repeatedly associated with recommended brands.

Provider difference Does the source set change?

Compare the same prompt across different AI platforms.

Trend Is your influence growing?

Track whether your pages and brand appear more frequently over time.

AI source FAQs

Questions about how AI chooses sources and brands.

Quick answers about AI source selection, citations and brand recommendations.

How does AI choose which websites to cite? +

There is no single selection method used by every AI platform. When web retrieval is used, systems can search for information relevant to the question, analyse candidate sources and use selected information when generating the answer. Relevance, usefulness, reliability and accessibility are sensible optimisation principles, but should not be treated as a universal published ranking formula.

Why does AI cite one website instead of another? +

The selected source may provide information that is particularly relevant or useful for that specific part of the answer. Different platforms can also use different retrieval systems and source sets, so the same page may be cited by one provider and absent from another.

Does domain authority determine which sites AI cites? +

There is no published universal rule where a particular SEO authority score determines AI citations. Strong and credible websites may naturally provide more useful source material, but third-party SEO authority metrics should not be treated as direct AI citation ranking factors.

Does AI always cite the original source? +

Not necessarily. Source behaviour differs between platforms and queries. Publishing original first-party information can give your site a strong reason to be referenced, but it does not guarantee that every AI answer will identify or cite the original source.

How does AI decide which brands to recommend? +

AI providers do not publish one universal brand-recommendation formula. In practice, useful areas to investigate include whether the business clearly fits the user’s requirements, how its positioning and capabilities are described, the evidence supporting those claims and the independent information available about the brand.

Can my business be recommended without my website being cited? +

Yes. A brand can appear in an answer while the visible supporting links point to third-party sources. This is why AEO should consider both your own website and the wider information ecosystem surrounding your brand.

Can my website be cited without my business being recommended? +

Yes. An article on your website may be useful evidence for an informational answer without the answer recommending your business. Citations and recommendations should therefore be measured separately.

How can I improve my chances of being selected as an AI source? +

Publish useful and accessible information that directly answers relevant questions, contribute original evidence where possible, support important claims, keep important information current and build legitimate authority around your subject. Then track which sources actually appear for the prompts relevant to your business.
